Cathunk. Cathunk. Cathunk.
The repeated jostling of the wagon was keeping Anna from getting any sleep. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a golden ring, holding it up to the moonlight. The top bore an insignia with a sigil, although it was charred and faded now. She slipped it onto her finger, nothing happened. She sighed and sat up.
"How much longer till we get to the Barrens?"
The man in front didn't look back. "It's still a few days away. I guess I forgot you've never left Glade before."
She laid back down. "Glade is a big country, I never had any reason to."
"Well it's hard to unless you go through the Bay Of Splendor, otherwise you're stuck in the desert for a month. Guess we have no choice though."
"You sure you can't get us a boat to Veridia?"
"No can do, word came that a hurricane is blowing through the bay, so land is our best bet. Only reason we're going through Jaerim is because they cut off the northern road from Alphindale."
"Bastards…" Anna anxiously brushed the wavy auburn hair from her face.
The man adjusted his heavy armor a bit, "With that stunt you pulled back there, I'm surprised there aren't more guards after us."
"My stunt? I'm surprised you don't have half the Sanctum after us, I hear they don't like rogue Inquisitors."
The man chuckled nervously and patted the sword at his hip. "I think it's safe to say we're both pretty wanted at this point."
Anna rolled over and got on her knees, poking her head up over the wagon's edge.
"Kenneth?"
He looked over at her, her seafoam eyes stared soulesly at him in the lantern light.
"Y-you can just call me Ken." He said sheepishly.
"Ken. Why did you rescue me?"
He looked back at the road. "You were a girl in danger, I had to. It was only right."
"But you abandoned your position as an Inquisitor."
"I was planning on leaving anyway."
"You aided a fugitive."
"I knew you were innocent."
"You saw the blood on my hands, Ken."
Ken was silent for a moment. He looked back over at her, her eyes still staring as cold as ever.
"..."
"Ken?"
"You don't have the eyes of a killer."
"Then what eyes do I have?"
He looked back at the road again, and the two were silent.
